  • The Paris congregation of the Church of Sweden was founded as early as 1626 when a group of Swedish and German Protestants met regularly for services. In the late 19th century, they were able to buy a plot of land in Montmartre to build a chapel, and thus, the Sofia congregation was formed in 1882.

    The present church was built in 1911-1913 to designs by Gustav Adolf Falk. In addition to the church hall, the property also includes a parsonage, parish hall and premises that are now rented out to the Swedish School in Paris.

    Among the pastors who have served in this congregation is Nathan Söderblom, who after his time in Paris became archbishop of the Church of Sweden (1914-1931) and who in 1930 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his ecumenical peace work.

  • Svenska kyrkans församling i Paris grundades redan år 1626 då en samling svenska och tyska protestanter träffades regelbundet för att ha gudstjänst. I slutet av 1800-talet fick man möjlighet att köpa en tomt i Montmartre för att bygga ett kapell och Sofiaförsamlingen bildades år 1882.

    Den nuvarande kyrkan byggdes 1911-1913 efter ritningar av Gustav Adolf Falk. I fastigheten finns förutom kyrkosalen även prästbostad, församlingshem samt lokaler som nu hyrs ut till Svenska skolan i Paris.

    Bland de kyrkoherdar som verkat i församlingen kan nämnas Nathan Söderblom som efter sin tid i Paris blev ärkebiskop (1914-1931) och som 1930 fick Nobels fredspris för sitt ekumeniska fredsarbete.

 

  • The Swedish Club in Paris was founded in 1890 and is thus the oldest Swedish expatriot club. Since 1936, it has been located near Place de la Concorde with a view of the Tuileries Garden. It is a beautiful Parisian apartment with three salons, decorated in Swedish style and adorned with a large collection of art by Grünewald, Dardel, Jirlow, and others. We are very honored to have the chance to use these beautiful premises that are so entrenched with Swedish history in the heart of Paris.

    Unfortunately, soon it will no longer be accessible to the Swedish Club. As a real travesty, the entire property has been sold to a new developer and the club is now looking for new premises. Our party will be the absolute last guests to have the opportunity to experience this now lost gem of Swedish heritage.

    One of the first members of the Club was the scientist, inventor, and pacifist Alfred Nobel. In 1866, he invented dynamite and Nobel became wealthy from the empire of dynamite factories that were built throughout Europe. It was at the Club that he signed his will in 1895, which at that time was 30 million kronor (equivalent to 2 billion kronor today or 170 million €). His desk is now in one of the salons at the Club.

    The Swedish Club also played an important role in the liberation of Paris from Nazi Germany. Hitler had ordered the demolition of all important monuments, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and others. But during long nightly discussions at the club, one of Sweden's forgotten heroes, Raul Nordling, convinced the German commander-in-chief Dietrich von Choltitz that it would be a crime against humanity to act on Hitler's orders. After the war, Nordling received France's highest honor, the Croix de Guerre. The events are described in a Hollywood film "Is Paris burning?" with Orson Welles as Nordling in 1966.

  • Svenska klubben i Paris bildades 1890 och är därmed den äldsta svenska utlandsklubben. Sedan 1936 ligger den invid Place de la Concorde med utsikt över Tuillerieträdgården. Det är en vacker parislägenhet med tre salonger, inredd med svensk stil och besmyckad med en stor samling konst av bl a Grünewald, Dardel, Jirlow m fl. Vi är mycket glada att kunna låna denna vackra lokal med svensk historia i mitten av Paris men vi blir de sista som kan vara här. Hela fastigheten har sålts och klubben letar nya lokaler. Vi blir de sista gästerna.

    En av de första medlemmarna var vetenskapsmannen, uppfinnaren och pacifisten Alfred Nobel. Men i långa nattliga diskussioner på klubben övertygade en av Sveriges glömda hjältar, Raul Nordling, den tyske överbefälhavaren Dietrich von Choltitz att det vore ett brott mot mänskligheten. Efter kriget fick Nordling Frankrikes högsta utmärkelse ”Croix de Guerre”. Förloppet är beskrivet i en Hollywoodfilm ”Is Paris burning?” med Orson Welles som Nordling 1966.
